Recommended Sightseeing Stops
Râșnov Fortress
Towering over the town of Râșnov, this 14th-century hilltop fortress was built by Teutonic Knights and later expanded by Saxon settlers. It served as a key defensive structure during numerous invasions and was only breached once in its history. Recently restored, its walls, towers, and panoramic views of the Carpathian Mountains offer visitors a dramatic window into medieval Transylvania.
Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle)
Perched on a 200-foot-high cliff near the former border of Wallachia and Transylvania, Bran Castle is famously associated with the Dracula legend. Originally a military fortress built in the 13th century, it later became a royal residence gifted to Queen Marie of Romania. Today it is one of the most visited sites in the country, filled with Gothic architecture, period furniture, and mysterious allure.
Peleș Castle – Sinaia
Located in the mountain town of Sinaia, Peleș Castle is a stunning royal residence commissioned by King Carol I in 1873. The building is a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance design and was the first castle in Europe fully powered by electricity. Inside, visitors will discover exquisitely decorated rooms, rich woodwork, and artistic details in every corner. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in royal history or architecture.
Slănic Prahova Salt Mine
One of the most impressive underground attractions in Romania, the Slănic Salt Mine is located 100 km north of Bucharest. No longer used for extraction, the mine is now open to the public. Its clean air, rich in therapeutic aerosols, benefits people with respiratory conditions. With consistent air temperature and pressure, as well as recreational spaces and playgrounds deep underground, it’s an unusual and refreshing stop.
Snagov Monastery
Tucked away on an island in Lake Snagov, this serene Orthodox monastery dates back to the Middle Ages and is steeped in legend. Archaeological findings place its origins as far back as the Bronze Age. According to popular belief, this is the final resting place of Vlad Țepeș (Dracula), secretly buried here by monks after his death in 1476. With its spiritual significance and quiet natural surroundings, Snagov is a peaceful and mysterious final stop before reaching Bucharest.
