Optional Stops Along the Route
Râșnov Fortress
Standing proudly on a rocky hilltop in the Carpathians, Râșnov Fortress was built in the 14th century by the Teutonic Knights and later expanded by Saxon settlers. Surrounded by towers, bastions, and medieval walls, the fortress was only conquered once in its history, in 1612. Today, visitors can walk through its restored ruins, take in spectacular views, and immerse themselves in centuries of defense, siege, and resilience.
Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle)
Located at the historical border between Transylvania and Wallachia, Bran Castle is Romania’s most famous fortress. Often linked to the Dracula legend, the castle’s true history is even more fascinating. Originally built by the Teutonic Knights and later gifted to Queen Marie, it combines Gothic beauty with royal elegance. Today it houses a museum showcasing royal art, antique furniture, and exhibits about the myths that surround it.
Peleș Castle – Sinaia
In the mountain resort of Sinaia, Peleș Castle is an architectural masterpiece. Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873, it became the Romanian royal family's summer residence. The castle is famed not only for its spectacular design and richly decorated rooms, but also for being the first castle in Europe powered entirely by local electricity. Each room is a visual journey through styles, cultures, and European elegance.
Slănic Prahova Salt Mine
Just 100 km north of Bucharest, the Slănic Salt Mine offers a unique underground attraction. Its microclimate—rich in salt aerosols and with a constant temperature—is considered therapeutic, especially for those with respiratory conditions. The mine is also a recreational area, with playgrounds and ping-pong tables set deep below the surface, offering visitors a truly different type of experience.
Snagov Monastery
Located on a secluded island in Lake Snagov, this centuries-old monastery is surrounded by legend. Archaeological remains suggest the site was used since the Bronze Age. It is famously believed to be the final resting place of Vlad the Impaler (Dracula), buried secretly by monks after his death. The monastery was also a key religious and cultural center of medieval Wallachia.
