Optional Sightseeing Stops
Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle)
Perched dramatically on a steep cliff at the edge of Transylvania, Bran Castle is one of Romania’s most visited landmarks. Often linked to the Dracula myth, its real history is just as captivating. Built in 1212 by the Teutonic Knights and later gifted to Queen Marie, the castle is a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. Today, it serves as a museum, housing art, furniture, and relics from Romania’s royal past.
Peleș Castle – Sinaia
Set in the forested mountains of Sinaia, this 19th-century royal residence commissioned by King Carol I is a jewel of German Neo-Renaissance architecture. With richly decorated rooms, elegant towers, and technological innovations (it was the first electrified castle in Europe), Peleș Castle is often ranked among the most beautiful castles on the continent.
Comana Monastery
Built in 1461 by Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș) as a defensive monastery, Comana Monastery is shrouded in both history and legend. Located in a swampy area once accessible only via a wooden bridge, the monastery also may be the true burial place of Vlad Țepeș, according to archaeological and historical theories. Today it remains an important spiritual site just south of Bucharest.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo (Bulgaria)
Crossing into Bulgaria, one of the most extraordinary spiritual stops is the UNESCO-listed rock churches of Ivanovo. Carved directly into stone cliffs, this medieval monastic complex was inhabited from the 13th to 17th centuries. Though only a few of the original 40 churches and over 300 dwellings remain, the surviving sites feature some of the finest medieval frescoes in Eastern Europe.
Veliko Tarnovo – City of the Tsars
Known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Veliko Tarnovo is a treasure trove of Bulgarian heritage. Spread across three hills, the town is famous for its two medieval fortresses, winding cobbled streets, and preserved Ottoman and medieval architecture. A walk through the Old Town reveals centuries of layered history, from royal glory to socialist past, all in one compelling destination.
