Recommended Sights Along the Way

Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) – Romania

Located at the former border between Transylvania and Wallachia, Bran Castle is Romania’s most iconic fortress, famously linked to the Dracula myth. Originally built by the Teutonic Knights and later gifted to Queen Marie of Romania, the castle is now a museum showcasing her personal collections and royal decor. Its imposing towers and dramatic location continue to draw history lovers and curious travelers alike.

Peleș Castle – Sinaia, Romania

Nestled in the scenic mountain town of Sinaia, Peleș Castle is a former royal residence and a masterpiece of 19th-century European architecture. Commissioned by King Carol I and fully powered by locally produced electricity, Peleș features ornately decorated rooms, exquisite art collections, and stunning exterior details — all set against a forested Carpathian backdrop.

Comana Monastery – Romania

Built in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler) as a monastery-fortress, Comana Monastery played both spiritual and military roles. Located in what was once a swampy, hard-to-access region, the site has become famous due to a headless skeleton unearthed in the 1970s, believed by some to be Vlad himself. Rich in atmosphere and history, Comana is a thought-provoking stop south of Bucharest.

Basarbovo Monastery – Bulgaria

Located near Ruse, Basarbovo Monastery is Bulgaria’s only active rock-hewn monastery. Perched above the Rusenski Lom River, it’s named after St. Dimitar Basarbovski, a 17th-century shepherd who became revered for his hermit lifestyle and miracles. The monastery is both a sacred pilgrimage site and a peaceful viewpoint over the surrounding landscape.

Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo – Bulgaria

A unique and remarkable destination, the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo are carved directly into limestone cliffs. Between the 13th and 17th centuries, monks created over 40 churches and 300 dwellings in this cliffside complex. While many are no longer intact, the surviving chapels are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to their striking medieval frescoes — a spiritual and artistic highlight of Bulgaria.
