Optional Sightseeing Stops
Slănic Prahova Salt Mine
Just 100 km north of Bucharest, Slănic Salt Mine is one of Romania’s most unique underground attractions. While no longer used for extraction, the mine is now open to visitors and known for its natural microclimate, rich in aerosols and ideal for those with respiratory conditions.
Inside, you’ll find recreational areas, a playground, ping-pong tables, and vast chambers carved from salt — offering both relaxation and an awe-inspiring environment beneath the earth’s surface.
Peleș Castle – Sinaia
In the picturesque mountain town of Sinaia, you’ll find one of Europe’s most beautiful castles: Peleș Castle. Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873, it served as the Romanian royal family’s summer residence and was the first castle in the world fully powered by local electricity.
Its interiors are a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance style, with each room decorated in a different artistic theme — from Gothic to Baroque, Moorish to Florentine. A stop here is like stepping into the refined world of 19th-century European royalty.
Râșnov Fortress
Perched atop a rocky hill at 650 feet above the town of Râșnov, this 14th-century fortress was built by the Teutonic Knights and later expanded by Saxon settlers. It played a critical role in defending the region against invasions and was only breached once in its history.
Today, Râșnov Fortress has been restored and offers visitors panoramic views of the Carpathian Mountains, along with insight into medieval defense, architecture, and community life within its stone walls.
