Bucharest to Giurgiu
Explore the legendary legacy of Vlad the Impaler in a unique historical and spiritual setting
Enhance your journey through southern Romania with an optional stop at Comana Monastery, one of the most fascinating and mysterious religious sites in the country. Blending medieval fortification with Orthodox tradition, this destination offers both historical intrigue and spiritual reflection.
Optional Stop: Comana Monastery – Fortress, Sanctuary, Legend
Originally built in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler), Comana Monastery was more than a place of worship — it was a strategic monastery-fortress, built on an island surrounded by marshes and accessible only via a wooden bridge, designed to be easily burned in case of attack.
During archaeological excavations in the 1970s, researchers discovered a headless skeleton buried within the grounds. Many believe this may be the final resting place of Vlad Țepeș himself, killed near the area and possibly interred here in secret by monks. If true, Comana would be not just a place of legend, but of historical truth.
Today, the monastery is a peaceful complex set in a nature reserve, inviting visitors to explore its tranquil gardens, restored walls, and centuries-old religious buildings, all echoing with stories of power, sacrifice, and redemption.
