Bucharest to Iasi
A solemn detour through Romania’s legacy of courage and sacrifice
Turn your journey into a moment of reflection by choosing an optional stop at the Mausoleum of Mărășești, one of Romania’s most important war memorials. Located in eastern Romania, this imposing structure honors the bravery and sacrifice of over 5,000 Romanian soldiers and officers who gave their lives during World War I, particularly in the Battle of Mărășești — the most significant Romanian engagement of the war.
Mausoleum of Mărășești – A Monument to National Heroism
Constructed over a 15-year period by architects George Cristinel and Constantin Pomponiu, the mausoleum was inaugurated on September 18, 1938, in the presence of King Carol II. Its architecture is grand and austere, symbolizing strength, mourning, and national pride.
The interior crypts house the remains of 5,073 fallen heroes, while the walls are engraved with their names. The site also includes the tomb of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, Romania’s most celebrated female war hero. With its circular layout and symbolic design, the monument offers not just a place of remembrance but a powerful historical experience.
