Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip

Comana Monastery
Originally founded by Vlad the Impaler in 1461, Comana Monastery served both spiritual and military purposes. Situated on what was once an island in the middle of marshland, the monastery was designed for defense, complete with a strategically burnable wooden bridge. During archaeological excavations in the 1970s, a headless skeleton — possibly Vlad the Impaler himself — was found buried within the monastery grounds, making this a deeply symbolic and mysterious stop.

Sveta Troitsa Church – Ruse
Constructed in 1632 under Ottoman rule, this church was built below ground level to comply with Islamic laws on Christian visibility. Despite its discreet exterior, inside you'll find a richly carved gilt wood iconostasis, beautifully painted faux-marble pillars, and a remarkable five-bell tower built from stone blocks recovered from a nearby medieval fortress. Today, Sveta Troitsa also houses a small museum of sacred artifacts, including a 16th-century Gospel.

Basarbovo Monastery
The only active cave monastery in modern Bulgaria, Basarbovo Monastery is perched in the cliffs above the Rusenski Lom River. It became famous in the 17th century due to Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, a hermit who lived and worshipped there. Revered for his humility, Saint Dimitar's legacy still draws pilgrims and visitors seeking peace and spiritual reflection in this quiet, cliff-carved sanctuary.

Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
These extraordinary medieval churches, carved directly into limestone cliffs, date back to the 13th century. Once comprising up to 40 churches and 300 monastic cells, the complex is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its well-preserved frescoes — among the most expressive examples of Eastern European religious art. The panoramic views from the site add an unforgettable dimension to this historical experience.

Prohodna Cave – “God’s Eyes”
A marvel of natural architecture, Prohodna is a massive karst cave known for its unique ceiling holes shaped like eyes — nicknamed "God’s Eyes." This dramatic formation allows natural light to pour in, creating a mystical atmosphere inside. The cave is accessible through two opposing entrances and is popular for sightseeing, climbing, and even bungee jumping, thanks to the immense size of its vaulted ceilings.
