Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip

Comana Monastery
Built in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș, the Comana Monastery was originally designed as a fortified religious complex. The monastery stood on an island in the middle of marshes and could be accessed only by a wooden bridge—easily flammable for defense purposes. Archaeological digs in the 1970s uncovered a headless body on the grounds, which some historians believe may be the resting place of Vlad the Impaler himself. Today, Comana is a serene yet historically rich destination.

Sveta Troitsa Church
Located in Ruse, Bulgaria, Sveta Troitsa was built in 1632 below ground level due to Ottoman rules limiting the visibility of Christian churches. Despite its modest exterior, the church houses a stunning wooden iconostasis, beautifully painted columns, and rare icons. Its 19-meter-high bell tower—built using stone from a ruined fortress wall—stands in stark contrast to the church's humble design. The adjacent museum features 16th-century gospels, ecclesiastical garments, and sacred art.

Basarbovo Monastery
This cave monastery near the village of Basarbovo is carved into limestone cliffs above the Rusenski Lom River. It is the only active rock monastery in modern-day Bulgaria. Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, who lived a life of hermitage in the 17th century, gave the site its name. After his death, the monastery gained national and religious significance, becoming a pilgrimage site known for its natural seclusion and spiritual atmosphere.

Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this network of cave churches and monasteries was carved directly into the cliffs above the Rusenski Lom River. Established in the 13th century, the site once housed hundreds of monks who created vibrant murals with deep theological and artistic significance. Although only a handful of churches remain intact today, the surviving frescoes showcase some of the finest examples of medieval Bulgarian art.

Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria
Overlooking the city of Shumen from a plateau, this monumental cubist-style structure celebrates the foundation of the Bulgarian state in 681 AD. Built in 1981, the complex features towering concrete sculptures of early rulers and symbolic scenes of national unity. Standing at 450 meters above sea level, the monument is visible from up to 30 kilometers away and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
