Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria
Towering above the city of Shumen, this massive concrete monument was erected in 1981 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the First Bulgarian Empire. Built in a striking Cubist style, the monument features large abstract figures of early Bulgarian rulers and cultural figures. At 450 meters above sea level, the structure dominates the skyline and can be seen from over 30 kilometers away. A dramatic stairway leads visitors to the top, where panoramic views and a sense of national grandeur await.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
Carved directly into limestone cliffs above the Rusenski Lom River, the rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo date back to the 13th century. These cave sanctuaries were created by monks who lived in isolation, and at their peak, the complex included more than 300 rooms and 40 churches. The remaining chapels are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famed for their medieval frescoes that reflect a high level of artistry and spiritual devotion.
Basarbovo Monastery
Located near the Bulgarian city of Ruse, the Basarbovo Monastery is the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria today. Nestled in a cliffside overlooking the Rusenski Lom river, it is dedicated to Saint Dimitar Basarbovski — a shepherd turned monk who lived in ascetic solitude. The monastery has long been a pilgrimage site and is steeped in quiet serenity, with small chapels carved into the rock and icons that tell the story of its hermit founder.
Comana Monastery
Built in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler), Comana Monastery stands on what was once an island in a marshland near the Danube. The monastery originally served as a fortress as well as a place of worship. Surrounded by legends and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries, it is believed by some historians to be the final resting place of Vlad himself. The site is peaceful and secluded, a spiritual retreat with a storied past.
