Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip

Curtea de Argeș Monastery
Located in the foothills of the Carpathians, this 16th-century Orthodox cathedral is famous for its intricate architecture and powerful legend. Built in a Moorish-Byzantine style, the church is said to hold the remains of Queen Marie of Romania. Its fame is also tied to the legend of Master Manole, a craftsman who, according to folklore, had to entomb his wife within the walls to ensure the church would stand.

Cozia Monastery
Nestled on the banks of the Olt River, Cozia Monastery is one of the most historically significant religious sites in Romania. Built between 1386 and 1388 by Mircea the Elder — the grandfather of Vlad the Impaler — the complex features a stunning medieval church and two chapels added in the 16th and 18th centuries. It is a spiritual and architectural treasure of Wallachia.

Făgăraș Citadel
Among the most fortified castles in Transylvania, Făgăraș Citadel was constructed over a destroyed 12th-century fortress. Over time, it became a key military stronghold. With 85 rooms, a well-preserved torture chamber, and legends of prisoners entombed within its walls, the citadel now hosts the Museum of Făgăraș County — and invites visitors to step into a darker chapter of medieval life.

Cisnădie Fortified Church
This 12th-century Saxon church stands as a remarkable example of medieval defensive architecture. In the 15th century, it was fortified with double walls, towers, and a surrounding moat to withstand Ottoman attacks. Its bell tower, soaring nearly 60 meters, houses a clock that has functioned continuously since 1868 — a symbol of the town’s enduring resilience and craftsmanship.
