Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria
Also known as the Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument, this grand structure was erected in 1981 on a plateau above the city of Shumen to commemorate 1300 years of the First Bulgarian Empire. Designed in Cubist style using concrete, it was created by sculptors Krum Damyanov and Ivan Slavov. The monument stands 450 meters above sea level and can be seen from as far as 30 kilometers away.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
These monastic sanctuaries were carved directly into the cliffs by hermit monks starting in the 13th century. At their height, the complex included around 40 churches and over 300 structures. Although many did not survive, the remaining churches are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, admired for their impressive medieval frescoes and spiritual significance.
Basarbovo Monastery
This Bulgarian Orthodox cave monastery lies near the town of Ruse, built into the rocky cliffs above the Rusenski Lom River. It gained fame in the 17th century due to the ascetic life of Saint Dimitar Basarbovski. Pilgrims still visit the site today to pay their respects and admire the simplicity and serenity of the monastery’s natural setting.
Comana Monastery
Founded in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler), Comana Monastery was designed as a fortified spiritual refuge on an island in the middle of marshlands. Access was once secured by a wooden bridge designed to be easily burned in case of attack. Archaeological excavations in the 1970s uncovered a headless skeleton, believed by some historians to be that of Vlad himself.
