Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Turda Salt Mine
The first documented mention of the Turda Salt Mine dates back to May 1, 1271. Since 1992, it has functioned as both a halotherapy center and a major tourist attraction. In 2008, the mine underwent modernization through the PHARE 2005 program and reopened to the public in 2010. With its impressive underground chambers and recreational facilities, including a mini-golf course and amphitheater, Salina Turda was named by Business Insider as one of the “25 hidden gems around the world that are worth the trek.”
Alba Iulia Citadel
The Alba Carolina Citadel is a star-shaped fortress in Alba Iulia, constructed between 1715 and 1738 during Habsburg rule. Built over earlier Roman and medieval fortresses, this Vauban-style stronghold was part of a wider defense system designed by Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today, it’s one of the best-preserved and most historically significant citadels in Romania, often hosting reenactments and historical ceremonies.
Sibiu
A gem of Transylvania, Sibiu is a city where medieval charm meets cultural prestige. Once the capital of the Transylvanian Saxons, Sibiu was named a European Capital of Culture in 2007 and ranked as Europe’s 8th most idyllic place to live by Forbes. Visitors can wander through its cobbled streets, admire its grand squares, and enjoy the rich mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture.
Fagaras Citadel
This medieval fortress began as a wooden stronghold in the 12th century and evolved into one of Transylvania’s most formidable citadels. The current stone structure was expanded between the 15th and 17th centuries. With 85 rooms and a well-preserved torture chamber, Fagaras Citadel tells haunting stories of medieval justice. It now houses the Museum of Fagaras County and offers a glimpse into centuries of history.
Curtea de Arges Monastery
This 16th-century Orthodox cathedral is famed not just for its elaborate Byzantine and Moorish-style architecture, but also for the legend of Master Manole — a tragic tale of sacrifice and artistry. Located in the town of Curtea de Argeș, the cathedral is a spiritual and historical landmark, often visited as the burial site of Romanian royalty.
