Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Veliko Tarnovo
Often referred to as the “City of the Tsars,” Veliko Tarnovo was once the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 12th century. Set across three hills with two medieval fortresses and 19th-century Ottoman architecture, this town offers an immersive look into Bulgaria’s royal and cultural past.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
These UNESCO World Heritage churches were carved directly into rock formations starting in the 13th century. At its height, the complex featured around 40 churches and over 300 monastic cells. Though many have been lost to time, the remaining sites still preserve stunning examples of medieval Orthodox frescoes.
Basarbovo Monastery
Basarbovo is a Bulgarian Orthodox cave monastery located near Ruse, carved into limestone cliffs about 35 meters above the Rusenski Lom River. It became known in the 17th century through the story of Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, a humble shepherd who lived ascetically in the monastery’s caves and was later canonized.
Sveta Troitsa Church
Constructed in 1632 partially below ground level, this church was built to comply with Ottoman laws of the time. Its richly decorated iconostasis and hexagonal bell tower made from fortress stones make it one of the architectural highlights of the region. The church also hosts a small museum with 16th-century religious artifacts and icons.
Comana Monastery
Originally established by Vlad the Impaler in 1461, Comana Monastery was designed as a fortified spiritual refuge. Built on what used to be an island in a swamp, it was only accessible by a wooden bridge. During archaeological digs in the 1970s, a headless skeleton believed to be Vlad himself was discovered on the monastery grounds.
