Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip

Comana Monastery

Founded in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler), Comana Monastery originally served as a fortified religious center. Once located on an island surrounded by swamps, the monastery could only be accessed by crossing a wooden bridge that could be burned for protection. Archaeological digs in the 1970s unearthed a headless body that some historians believe may belong to Vlad himself. The site offers both historical intrigue and peaceful surroundings.

Snagov Monastery

Hidden in dense forest and encircled by Lake Snagov, this monastery is one of Wallachia’s oldest religious centers. Archaeological finds show human presence here since the Bronze and Iron Ages. Legend has it that after Vlad Țepeș was killed in 1476, monks secretly buried his body in the church. Whether myth or truth, the monastery remains a serene and mysterious place to visit.

Peleș Castle

Located in Sinaia, this 19th-century gem is widely considered one of Europe’s most beautiful castles. Built by King Carol I in the German Neo-Renaissance style, Peleș Castle served as the royal summer residence and became the first fully electrified castle in Europe. Its rooms are each decorated in different artistic styles, making every step through the castle a journey through time and culture.

Bran Castle

Perched dramatically on a 200-foot-high rock, Bran Castle is often associated with Dracula’s legend. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1212 and later rebuilt in 1377, it was gifted to Queen Marie of Romania in 1920 and served as a royal residence. The castle is now a museum showcasing Queen Marie’s art and furniture, attracting visitors fascinated by both history and myth.

Râșnov Fortress

First mentioned in 1331, Râșnov Fortress was built as a defense against Tartar invasions and later enhanced by Saxon settlers. The fortress stands proudly atop a rocky hill, overlooking the town of Râșnov. With its nine towers and fortified structure, it has only been conquered once in its history. Restored in recent years, it now welcomes visitors eager to explore its legends and commanding views.
