Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Comana Monastery
Founded in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler), Comana Monastery was originally built as a fortress-monastery on what was once an island in the swamps. Accessed via a wooden bridge designed to be easily destroyed in times of attack, the monastery was both spiritual and strategic. Archaeological digs in the 1970s uncovered a headless skeleton that some believe may be that of Vlad himself, buried near the place he died in battle.
Curtea de Argeș Monastery
A remarkable 16th-century Orthodox cathedral located in the town of Curtea de Argeș, this site is steeped in history and legend. The cathedral was constructed in an elaborate Byzantine style with Moorish influences. According to local legend, master builder Manole was forced to entomb his wife within the walls to ensure the church’s stability. The site continues to awe visitors with its beauty and mystique.
Cozia Monastery
Cozia Monastery is one of Romania’s most treasured historical and artistic monuments. Situated along the Olt River, it was established between 1386 and 1388 by Mircea the Elder, grandfather of Vlad the Impaler. The monastery includes the main medieval church and two chapels added in the 16th and 18th centuries, making it a complex site of religious and architectural significance.
Făgăraș Citadel
This formidable fortress began as a 12th-century wooden structure and evolved into one of Transylvania’s strongest medieval fortifications. Expanded over the centuries, the citadel now features 85 rooms, including a torture chamber that still houses some of Europe’s most feared medieval instruments. A tunnel and human remains were discovered during restoration, offering a chilling look into its past. Today, the citadel is home to the Museum of Făgăraș County.
Cisnădie Fortified Church
This impressive fortified church dates back to the 12th century and was heavily fortified in the 15th century to protect against Ottoman invasions. Additions included defensive towers, double walls, and a moat. One of the most unique features is the still-functioning clock tower, standing at 195 feet tall, which has been ticking without need of repair since 1868.
