Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip

Cisnădie Fortified Church

Originally constructed in the 12th century, Cisnădie Fortified Church was significantly strengthened in the 15th century to defend the local Saxon population from frequent Ottoman invasions. The upgrades included towers over the two entrances and the choir, a double wall structure, a protective moat, and several watchtowers. Remarkably, its 195-foot clock tower — installed in 1868 — has never required repairs and still functions today.

Făgăraș Citadel

One of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Transylvania, Făgăraș Citadel evolved from a 12th-century wooden stronghold destroyed by the Tatars. Starting in 1310, it was rebuilt and expanded into a formidable stone castle. With 85 rooms, including a torture chamber and secret tunnels, it served as both a military and administrative center. Since 1954, it has housed the Museum of Făgăraș County, preserving centuries of regional history.

Cozia Monastery

Cozia Monastery, located on the banks of the Olt River, is one of Romania’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks. Founded between 1386 and 1388 by Mircea the Elder, grandfather of Vlad the Impaler, the complex includes the original medieval church and two later chapels. Its architecture and well-preserved frescoes make it an important stop for those interested in Romanian Orthodoxy and medieval art.

Curtea de Argeș Monastery

Built in the early 16th century in Byzantine style with Moorish elements, this grand cathedral is one of Romania’s most iconic religious sites. Located on the grounds of the Curtea de Argeș Monastery, it is deeply tied to Romanian legend. According to the myth of Master Manole, the monastery’s stability required a human sacrifice — his own wife Ana — who was entombed in the wall to stop the construction from collapsing.
