Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip

Cisnădie Fortified Church

Originally built in the 12th century, Cisnădie Fortified Church was later reinforced during the 15th century to protect against frequent Ottoman invasions. The upgrades included fortified towers over the two entrances and choir, a dual wall system, a surrounding moat, and multiple defensive towers. Its 195-foot-high clock and bell tower has remained operational since 1868—remarkably without any repairs.

Făgăraș Citadel

An imposing medieval fortress, Făgăraș Citadel stands on the foundation of a 12th-century wooden structure destroyed by the Tatars. Rebuilt beginning in 1310, it evolved into one of Transylvania’s most resilient strongholds. The citadel contains 85 rooms, including a torture chamber and secret tunnels, and since 1954 has hosted the Museum of Făgăraș County. Legends say that criminals were once buried within its very walls.

Cozia Monastery

Situated on the right bank of the Olt River, Cozia Monastery is among the oldest and most culturally significant religious sites in Romania. Founded between 1386–1388 by Mircea the Elder, the grandfather of Vlad the Impaler, it includes a main medieval church and two chapels from the 16th and 18th centuries. Its architectural beauty and historic relevance make it a meaningful stop along the way.

Curtea de Argeș Monastery

Built in the early 16th century, this Romanian Orthodox cathedral is renowned for its Moorish and Byzantine-inspired architecture. It is especially famous for the legend of Master Manole, who, to ensure the church’s survival, immured his wife Ana into its southern wall. The monastery stands today as one of Romania’s most iconic places of worship and legend.
