Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Curtea de Argeș Monastery
The Cathedral of Curtea de Argeș, dating back to the early 16th century, is one of Romania’s most iconic religious landmarks. Built in an elaborate Byzantine architectural style with Moorish influences, it is not only a sacred place but also the setting of a dramatic legend. According to folklore, the master builder Manole immured his own wife, Ana, into the monastery walls to ensure the building’s stability. Today, the monastery remains a site of deep reverence and architectural beauty.
Comana Monastery
Founded by Vlad the Impaler in 1461, Comana Monastery was originally a fortified religious sanctuary built on an island in the middle of swamplands. Accessible only via a wooden bridge designed to be easily destroyed in times of danger, the monastery played both spiritual and defensive roles. Archeological digs in the 1970s uncovered a headless body on the site — possibly that of Vlad himself — further deepening its mysterious allure.
Basarbovo Monastery
Perched above the Rusenski Lom River, this Bulgarian Orthodox cave monastery near Ruse dates back to the 17th century and honors Saint Dimitar Basarbovski. A shepherd-turned-hermit, Saint Dimitar is praised in Bulgarian religious history, including the famous chronicle Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya. Visitors can explore the peaceful rock-hewn sanctuary where he once lived and prayed in solitude.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
Carved directly into the cliffs near the village of Ivanovo, these churches and monastic cells were inhabited by monks from the 13th to the 17th century. At its peak, the complex included around 40 churches and over 300 individual dwellings. Today, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its preserved medieval frescoes and its significance in Bulgarian Orthodox culture.
Veliko Tarnovo
Known as the “City of the Tsars,” Veliko Tarnovo is the former capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The city’s dramatic setting on three hills and its medieval fortresses make it one of the most picturesque and historically rich destinations in Bulgaria. The Old Town, with its cobblestone streets and Ottoman architecture, offers visitors a journey through time and an unforgettable cultural experience.
