Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Curtea de Argeș Monastery
The Cathedral of Curtea de Argeș, dating back to the early 16th century, is one of Romania’s most iconic Orthodox landmarks. With its elaborate Byzantine architecture and delicate Moorish arabesques, the monastery is not only architecturally impressive but also steeped in legend. According to folklore, the master builder Manole entombed his wife Ana into the church walls to prevent the structure from collapsing, making it both a sacred site and a place of mythic tragedy.
Comana Monastery
Founded by Vlad the Impaler in 1461, Comana Monastery was originally built as a fortified monastery on an island surrounded by swamps. Designed for defense as much as devotion, it was accessible only via a flammable wooden bridge. Excavations in the 1970s uncovered a headless skeleton believed by some to be that of Vlad himself, adding an air of mystery and legend to the already captivating site.
Basarbovo Monastery
Located near Ruse, Basarbovo Monastery is the only active cave monastery in Bulgaria today. Carved into the limestone cliffs 35 meters above the Rusenski Lom River, it honors Saint Dimitar Basarbovski — a humble shepherd and ascetic who lived and prayed here in the 17th century. His story was immortalized in the historic manuscript Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya, making this site a cherished destination for pilgrims and visitors alike.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
This remarkable monastic complex dates back to the 13th century and was carved directly into the cliffs of the Rusenski Lom Nature Park. At its peak, the community included over 40 churches and 300 rooms, inhabited by monks over several centuries. Though many structures are lost, those that remain are celebrated for their vivid medieval frescoes and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
