Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip

Prohodna Cave

Located in Bulgaria’s Iskar Gorge near the village of Karlukovo, Prohodna Cave is famous for its two striking ceiling openings known as the “Eyes of God.” These natural formations allow daylight to stream through the cavern, creating a surreal and spiritual atmosphere. With two entrances—Small and Big—the cave is also a favorite destination for climbers and bungee jumpers due to its impressive height and structure.

Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo

Carved into the cliffs near the village of Ivanovo, these churches and monastic dwellings were used by hermit monks from the 13th to 17th centuries. The complex once included around 40 churches and 300 individual rooms. Today, the surviving structures are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their unique medieval frescoes and religious significance.

Basarbovo Monastery

Perched above the Rusenski Lom River, this 17th-century cave monastery is named after Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, a shepherd who later became a revered hermit. Mentioned in the influential Bulgarian chronicle Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya, the monastery continues to attract pilgrims and visitors interested in spiritual solitude and monastic history.

Sveta Troitsa Church

Built in 1632 partially below ground level, Sveta Troitsa Church was constructed to comply with Ottoman laws restricting Christian worship buildings from appearing prominent. It features a gilded wooden iconostasis and a 19-meter-high bell tower made from stones taken from a ruined fortress. The church now houses a museum that exhibits religious artifacts, 16th-century texts, and a fine collection of murals and icons.

Comana Monastery

Established in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș (Vlad the Impaler), Comana Monastery served both spiritual and military roles. Built on an island surrounded by marshlands, the site was accessible via a burnable wooden bridge designed as a defensive measure. Archaeological excavations in the 1970s uncovered a headless body believed to be that of Vlad himself, adding a haunting historical layer to this peaceful sanctuary.
