Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Snagov Monastery
Hidden by dense forest and encircled by the waters of Lake Snagov, this monastery served as a vital spiritual and cultural hub of feudal Wallachia. Built on ancient grounds where Bronze and Iron Age artifacts were uncovered, it’s one of the region’s oldest monastic sites. Legend holds that Vlad Țepeș, also known as Dracula, was secretly buried here by monks after his assassination in 1476.
Old Salt Mine Slănic Prahova
Located 100 km north of Bucharest, the Slănic salt mine features a stable microclimate with therapeutic properties — especially beneficial for people with respiratory conditions. Though no longer active in salt extraction, the mine is open for tourism and even offers recreational facilities such as playgrounds and ping-pong tables, making it a fascinating underground attraction.
Peleș Castle
Set against the breathtaking Carpathian backdrop in Sinaia, Peleș Castle is a jewel of German neo-Renaissance architecture. Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873 as a royal summer residence, the castle impresses with ornate rooms, rich furnishings, and a pioneering energy system that made it the first fully electrified castle in the world.
Bran Castle
Perched dramatically on a rocky cliff, Bran Castle is world-famous as the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Although its origins trace back to the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, the present fortress was reconstructed by Saxon settlers in 1377. Later a royal residence, it is now a museum filled with Queen Marie’s art and furniture collections.
Râșnov Fortress
Râșnov’s medieval stronghold stands 650 feet above its namesake town, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Carpathians. Built in the 14th century by Teutonic Knights and reinforced by Saxons, the fortress was never conquered — except once, through the discovery of a hidden water route. Fully restored, it is a compelling destination for lovers of history and fortification design.
