Optional Sights to Visit on This Trip
Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria
Overlooking the city of Shumen, this massive Cubist-style monument was built in 1981 to celebrate the founding of the First Bulgarian Empire. Designed by sculptors Krum Damyanov and Ivan Slavov, the structure sits at 450 meters above sea level and can be seen from up to 30 kilometers away. It’s a bold and symbolic tribute to Bulgaria’s national legacy.
Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
These cliff-carved churches near the village of Ivanovo were inhabited by monks from the 13th to the 17th century. At their height, the complex included around 40 churches and over 300 dwellings. The surviving sanctuaries—now a UNESCO World Heritage Site—are celebrated for their vivid medieval frescoes and architectural ingenuity.
Basarbovo Monastery
Perched above the Rusenski Lom River, this cave monastery is the only active one of its kind in Bulgaria. Dedicated to Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, a humble shepherd turned hermit, it has served as a place of prayer and reflection since the 17th century. The peaceful surroundings and spiritual atmosphere make it a meaningful stop.
Comana Monastery
Originally built by Vlad the Impaler in 1461, this monastery-fortress was strategically located on an island within the swamps. It played a dual role as a religious site and defensive structure. Archaeological digs in the 1970s revealed a headless skeleton that some historians believe could be that of Vlad himself, adding to the site’s mystique.
Curtea de Argeș Monastery
This 16th-century cathedral is an architectural gem of Byzantine and Moorish styles. A powerful symbol of Romanian faith, it’s also the setting of the tragic legend of Master Manole, who entombed his wife within its walls to complete the construction. Today, it remains one of Romania’s most revered religious landmarks.
Cozia Monastery
Situated on the banks of the Olt River, Cozia Monastery was established by Mircea the Elder, grandfather of Vlad the Impaler, in the late 14th century. Known for its intricate frescoes and historical depth, it’s one of the most significant medieval religious sites in Romania.
Făgăraș Citadel
One of the best-preserved fortresses in Transylvania, Făgăraș Citadel has 85 rooms and a dark past—complete with a torture chamber and burial tunnels. Originally built on the ruins of a Tatar-destroyed wooden fortress, it evolved into a powerful stronghold and now hosts the Făgăraș County Museum.
Cisnădie Fortified Church
Dating back to the 12th century, this church was heavily fortified during the 15th century to protect against Ottoman invasions. Its double defensive walls, towers, and still-functioning 1868 clock tower make it a captivating blend of faith and fortification.
